Proteus Gowanus emulates early museums and libraries that encouraged study and contemplation, while embracing contemporary forms. A library of exhibit related reading material, including books, magazines, and limited edition publications, are available for study and purchase.

Central to this area is the building's original 8000 lb. safe utilized by Cabinet Magazine for a display of magazines and books with a rotating mini-exhibit; and The Artistsbook Library and Store curated by Maddy Rosenberg.

Also available: letterpress poetry books by Ugly Duckling Presse; books by Place in History: books, DVD’s and t-shirts by The Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club; Bomb Magazine; selected rare books; books about the Gowanus Canal; travel books (including travel books recommended by Brooklyn writers); books about libraries, ABC books.

Three permanent installations of an archival nature are located in a space adjacent to Proteus Gowanus:

The Museum of Matches, A Cold War Room
Developed by artist Sasha Chavchavadze, the installation explores the Cold War through an evolving array
of visual art, narrative prose, documents, photographs, memorabilia and publications.

The Reanimation Library
Developed by artist/librarian Andrew Beccone, the independent library serves artists,
writers and other cultural archeologists.
